The Samsung R20 ultrasound system is an AI-enabled general imaging ultrasound platform developed by Samsung Medison, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics.
The software-based, mobile diagnostic ultrasound device obtained US Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance in October 2024.
It was first presented in the US at the Radiological Society of North America 2025 annual meeting in Chicago, Illinois, in November 2025.
The system was introduced to the Indian market in December 2025.
Samsung R20 ultrasound system design and features
The Samsung R20 ultrasound system combines updated hardware with revised image‑processing methods to support diagnostic workflows and AI functions, along with controls arranged to reduce physical strain during use.
It includes an enhanced imaging engine, a dedicated graphics processing unit and a 27in OLED screen that delivers a wide viewing area with clear contrast and a dark background.
The system’s control panel can be repositioned to facilitate examinations across the whole body with limited operator movement while its height can be altered so that scans may be conducted while either seated or standing.
A 15.6in tilting touchscreen is provided, allowing adjustment of the viewing angle while helping to limit glare. Built‑in LED illumination assists with attaching and changing transducers in darker rooms.
The system also includes a redesigned gel warmer that can be fixed on either side to reduce the chance of impact with other parts, and a rear caster lock operated by foot. Storage areas are available for trays, printers, and other items.
The R20 ultrasound platform supports multiple transducer types and offers broad diagnostic functions.
It is designed with ergonomic use in mind, incorporating low-weight transducer cables, a touch-based user interface, and adjustable system settings for different clinical workflows.
The honeycomb-style construction of the transducer cables reduces their mass and improves ease of handling. Flexible cabling is intended to follow the operator’s movements and lessen drag and torque on the wrist and shoulder.
Samsung R20 Ultrasound System technology details
Samsung’s R20 ultrasound system is built on the company’s Crystal Architecture™ and is used for a broad range of general imaging tasks, providing consistent resolution and depth of imaging.
Crystal Architecture is structured to limit the amount of manual adjustment required, enabling clinicians to concentrate on the examination rather than control settings.
The ultrasound system incorporates several core technologies, including ClearVision, S-Harmonic™, S-Flow™ and MultiVision.
ClearVision adjusts image parameters according to the application and supports good temporal resolution during real-time scanning while S-Harmonic, which applies pulse inversion, is used to refine overall image clarity.
S-Flow is a directional power doppler method that can help visualise blood flow in smaller or more peripheral vessels, and MultiVision electronically steers the ultrasound beam and merges multiple scan lines to produce a more coherent image.
Clinical tools of Samsung R20 ultrasound system
The R20 platform incorporates several imaging functions and clinical tools such as the Live LiverAssist™, which supports real-time ultrasound assessment of the liver by indicating areas that may contain focal lesions of concern.
For breast imaging, the Live BreastAssist™ tool applies deep learning during scanning to highlight regions that may require closer examination and to show lesion position on the image.
S-Detect™ reviews user-selected lesions, presents structured analysis data and generates reports aligned with BI-RADS ATLAS criteria.
The NerveTrack™ tool uses deep learning to locate and outline nerves in real time during an ultrasound scan while the Panoramic+ imaging allows acquisition of an extended field of view from linear transducer data, enabling inspection of a broader anatomical area in one composite image, including angular sweeps.
Automated applications available on the R20 include AbdomenAssist™, BladderAssist™, ProstateAssist™, UterineAssist™, and BowelAssist™, which are intended to standardise examinations and limit operator-dependent variation.
Adjustments to doppler performance and colour flow display are designed to assist in identifying fine vascular structures and associated abnormalities.
