US President Donald Trump is expected to put forward Heidi Overton as his choice for the next commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), potentially marking another chapter for the agency after a period of significant turmoil fraught with high-profile leadership changes.
As per reporting from Bloomberg, an anonymous source familiar with the situation noted that Overton, a board-certified public health and general preventative medicine-focused physician and ex-Johns Hopkins Hospital general surgery resident, could soon take the helm at the FDA.

Currently, Overton serves as a deputy assistant to the president for domestic policy; a role which she has held since 2025. She has also held key leadership positions within the America First Policy Institute (AFPI), while spending a year-long stint between 2019 and 2020 as a White House fellow.
While Trump has allegedly endorsed Overton to become the next FDA commissioner, she would need to pass through a Senate confirmation hearing chaired by Bill Cassidy to secure this potential new role. In recent months, Louisiana-based Republican Cassidy’s relationship with Trump has become somewhat strained, as Cassidy calls Trump’s claims around the dangers of combined measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccines ‘crazy’ and ‘stupid’.
However, if the Senate take positively to Overton’s potential nomination, she will take the reins from acting commissioner, Kyle Diamantas, who took on the role after Marty Makary left the agency after a rollercoaster term fraught with accusations of politicisation, slow review times and significant leadership change.
During Diamantas’ time leading the agency, some drugs previously met with negative sentiments from the FDA under Makary’s control have won approval. This includes Moderna’s influenza vaccine, mFlusvia, which recently got the FDA’s blessing following the agency’s initial refusal to review the jab back in the Makary era due to concerns around the trial’s comparator arm.
The FDA’s revolving door
While Overton could become the latest to assume the pole position at the FDA, she will join an agency that has recently faced several high-profile leadership changes across its departments.
This includes the ousting of Makary, as well as the double resignation of the ex-Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) head, Vinay Prasad and the firing of prior drug evaluation lead, Tracy Beth Hoeg.
In a previous conversation with Medical Device Network’s sister publication, Clinical Trials Arena, Dr Robert Sikorski, managing director of Woodside Way Ventures and chief medical officer (CMO) of CERo Therapeutics, noted that, despite turbulence at the FDA, technical staff remain dedicated to their roles within the agency.
