Imricor Medical Systems has started commercial distribution of its NorthStar mapping system in the US.
According to the company, the technology is the first cardiac mapping and guidance system to utilise magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during minimally invasive heart procedures, replacing the conventional dependence on X-ray fluoroscopy.

The development enables clinicians to visualise the structure and tissue properties of the heart in real time while carrying out interventions and does not require the use of ionising radiation.
Traditional cardiac interventions have relied on X-ray imaging, with limitations in soft-tissue visualisation and exposure risks for patients and staff.
In response, the introduction of sensor-based tools provided partial mapping solutions, but continued to involve exposure to X-rays.
NorthStar is designed to leverage MRI throughout procedures, displaying both the heart and interventional devices within it, and allowing for real-time image manipulation.
