Medtronic has launched a new infusion set with a wear time of up to seven days for insulin pumps in the US.

Developed in collaboration with Convatec Infusion Care, the new Medtronic Extended Infusion Set is claimed to be the first and only infusion set that is designed for double the wear time.

The new infusion set leverages advanced materials to help minimise insulin preservative loss, maintain insulin flow and stability, and double the infusion set wear time.

It uses a new tubing connector that improves physical and chemical insulin stability as well as the reliability of infusion site performance. It also reduces the infusion set occlusion risk.

The set also includes an adhesive patch with an adhesive layer that supports the extended wear time and offers comfort and durability for up to seven days.

Along with the infusion set, the Medtronic Extended reservoir is said to be the only infusion set reservoir trialled and approved to help restore insulin stability and safety for up to seven days.

In clinical studies, the Medtronic Extended infusion set reduced the number of times an infusion set needed changing by 50%, as well as decreasing the number of infusion set failures linked to elevated glucose levels.

The study participants also found the new infusion set to be more comfortable to wear compared to their previous sets and were happy with the long wear feature.

The Medtronic Extended infusion set has been launched in the US and is exclusively available for customers using MiniMed 600 and 700 series pumps.
