OrthAlign has completed the first clinical procedures using its Lantern ASC system, designed for the ambulatory surgery centre (ASC) setting.
ASC owner and an orthopaedic surgeon Dr Zane Uhland conducted six total knee surgeries with Lantern ASC in less than four hours in an outpatient environment.

The Lantern ASC system is intended to provide what the company describes as advanced surgical technology tailored to the operational demands of outpatient joint replacement.
It aims to replicate the precision of more complex technology while offering a portable and cost-conscious alternative.
The system is positioned as a way for ASCs to access enabling technology without the financial and logistical requirements often associated with robotic surgical systems.
OrthAlign stated that its system does not require large upfront investment, yearly service agreements, exclusive operating room space, or requirements for specific implant volumes.
The Lantern ASC device is said to support several implant brands and is intended to give facilities more choice when selecting implants for different patients.
The firm highlights that Lantern ASC can accommodate fluctuating case volumes without needing facilities to purchase extra equipment or enter long-term contracts.
OrthAlign CEO Eric Timko said: “For too long, advanced technology has required facilities to accept significant financial and operational tradeoffs. Lantern ASC delivers a fundamentally different model, providing the benefits of enabling technology without expensive capital purchases, ongoing service contracts, or implant commitments.
“By preserving procedural efficiency and avoiding the workflow delays often associated with robotic systems, Lantern ASC helps ASCs treat more patients each day, driving greater revenue, stronger operating margins, and long-term growth while delivering high-quality patient care.”
Lantern ASC combines a reusable navigation unit with a Smart Pack Kit and provides navigation for total knee, partial knee, and ligament balancing procedures in both primary and revision arthroplasty.
In October 2024, OrthAlign expanded its portfolio of Lantern handheld navigation systems by securing a 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Lantern Hip device.
