Radiology Partners (RP), the largest radiology practice in the US, is partnering with generative artificial intelligence (genAI) software company RADPAIR to further the development of genAI use in radiology.

The organisations said the collaboration will combine RADPAIR’s technology with RP’s expertise in clinical workflow, AI validation, deployment and adoption, and RP’s network of more than 3,900 radiologists.

A past report by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has forecasted that a shortfall of radiologists in the US could reach almost 42,000 by 2036 – a matter that has been associated with factors such as a lack of residency positions available for trainees and more general disruption to educational and clinical training programmes for radiographers attributable to the pandemic.

Speaking at the 2024 Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) annual meeting, currently taking place in Chicago, US, from 1 to 4 December, Dr Nina Kottler, RP’s associate chief medical officer for clinical AI, told attendees the future of radiology hinges on embracing the radiologist’s role as the clinical information expert.

Kottler said: “To realise this vision, we must focus on building intelligent connections—human to human, human to tech and tech to tech.

“These connections are pivotal in addressing the critical capacity challenges radiology faces today, and our partnership with RADPAIR is an example of how RP is leading this transformation.”

RADPAIR CEO Avez Rizvi described the new partnership as a “turning point for radiology workflows”.

Rizvi commented: “Our innovations, combined with RP’s expansive technology platform and operational scale set a new benchmark for what’s possible in radiology, redefining how the speciality addresses efficiency and quality in patient care.”

According to GlobalData analysis, the global diagnostic imaging space was valued at around $36.3bn in 2023 and is forecast to reach a valuation of around $54.8bn by 2033.

In October, RP entered a similar partnership with health tech company Inventurus Knowledge Solutions, with the main aim of improving access to critical imaging services at RP network sites.
