Technology company Teleflex has acquired medical device firm Essential Medical for an undisclosed amount.

Founded in 2010, Essential Medical focuses on the development and commercialisation of vascular closure devices for femoral punctures after diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterisation procedures.

The acquisition is expected to boost Teleflex’s footprint in structural heart and endovascular aneurysm repair markets with the addition of Essential Medical’s Manta Vascular Closure Device.

Manta is a CE-Marked system designed for the closure of large bore arteriotomies after procedures that involve use of devices or sheaths sized between 10F and 18F.

Teleflex expects the bore closure device to help in addressing closure-related challenges and high costs that come with large interventional procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement, ventricular assist device implantation and endovascular aneurysm repair.

So far, Manta has been used in more than 8,100 procedures across various EU countries. The device is anticipated to secure US premarket approval next year.
