US-based smart glasses and augmented reality (AR) technology supplier Vuzix Corporation has reported expanding medical use of AR smart glasses.
Research conducted by third-party firm Censuswide presents insight from more than 500 surgeons across the US, highlighting the potential for the use of AR in medicine, mainly in the operating room and in surgical training.
Of the surgeons surveyed, half had been exposed to training with AR smart glasses and admitted its potential benefit over traditional methods. A further 49% agreed that AR smart glasses could reduce complications and fatalities in operating rooms caused by human error.
Specialty-wise, transplant surgeons exhibited the highest level of familiarity and interest in adopting AR smart glasses, with 41% expressing enthusiasm for their use. Neurosurgeons followed suit, with approximately one-third sharing the same sentiment.
In terms of the technology, 44% of surgeons emphasised the ability of AR smart glasses to provide access to in-depth information within their field of view, including 3D anatomical images, models, real-time medical references, and patient information.
It is suggested that this technology will present lower-risk surgical environments, with 41% of participants acknowledging that it will minimise unnecessary entry and exit from the operating room. Out of those surveyed, 28% acknowledged the benefits of collaborating with remote clinical teams and accessing surgical care worldwide.
