Liberate Medical has announced that its VentFree Respiratory Muscle Stimulator has received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for use during the Covid-19 pandemic. The VentFree Respiratory Muscle Stimulator can be used to decrease the disuse atrophy of the abdominal wall muscles. This helps reduce the time adult patients need mechanical ventilation.

Bio-Rad Laboratories has received an EUA for its SARS-CoV-2 Droplet Digital PCR (ddPCR) test kit. The test has high sensitivity and can be used to screen upper respiratory samples in patients who have a low viral load, and works in the early stages of infection. The test kit is operated on Bio-Rad’s QX200 and QXDx ddPCR systems.

Vyaire Medical and Spirit AeroSystems have announced their new manufacturing and supply collaboration to produce critical care ventilators at Wichita, Kansas in a converted facility. This partnership will help Vyaire to accelerate production of critical care ventilators. It follows the previous measures undertaken by Vyaire to increase the production of ventilators and other related respiratory equipment.

The Seoul Institute of Technology has partnered with InnoCentive, an open innovation firm, in an effort to limit the spread of Covid-19. SIT launched a challenge recently to explore mask filter technology and come up with ideas for other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The project will span over 30 days and contribution will be received from global network of InnoCentive. Successful submissions will receive funding from a total award pool of around $60,000.
