According to GlobalData, the disposable endoscopes market is set to grow at a remarkable compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 29%, resulting in a global market value exceeding $6 billion by 2030. This impressive growth rate is facilitated by the demand for healthcare systems to reduce time, costs, and cross-contamination potential when using reusable endoscopes that undergo sterilisation prior to reuse. The rapid growth of this market is also attributed to simple economics. The cost of purchasing reusable endoscopes is often an order of magnitude or higher than the cost of their disposable counterparts, so the market growth of disposable endoscopes is expected to be driven by both well-funded healthcare systems, and more budget-conscious medical facilities worldwide.
Since 2009, when the first disposable flexible videoscope was launched, dozens of product lines have been developed by over 30 companies. Part of the sustained growth seen today is also due to the continued investment by these companies in R&D and product launches, which enable more wide-ranging surgical procedures to switch to using disposable endoscopes instead. For example, Ambu, which remains the market leader of disposable endoscopes, received a 510(k) clearance by the FDA earlier this month for its aScope Gastro, which is the market’s first ever disposable gastroscope. As the sole player within this device category, Ambu can cement its position as the leader of the disposable gastroscopes space, before its competitors across other device categories catch on.
One notable competitor is Boston Scientific, which launched the first disposable duodenoscope, and remains ahead of Ambu in this category. Despite the heavy presence of Ambu and Boston Scientific in this market, GlobalData expects other medical device manufacturers to continue entering this market as early as this year, thus increasing its competitiveness. These competitors may include well-established, highly diversified manufacturers like Medtronic and Ethicon, as well as those that are more specialised in endoscopic devices, such as Olympus.
The disposable endoscopes market will disrupt the reusable endoscopes market. GlobalData estimates the global market value for 11 reusable endoscope types to have been worth $6.59 billion in 2021, growing at a CAGR of 7.5%. For the market leaders of these devices to remain competitive in an increasingly disruptive market, they will need to begin manufacturing disposable endoscopes, before the competitive landscape becomes overly crowded.
